1st Holiday Décor Job of the Season...

Nat and I have completed our first holiday décor job of this season. Our client asks us back each year for tree set-up and decorative garland trim at the windowsills of her gorgeous 4-season sunroom. She and her family will later trim the tree, enjoying their memories along with their ornaments. Inside her home we set up her "Snow Village" in the living room and we "do up" the family room's bookshelves.

Our client will have us back after the holiday season to pack up and store her holiday decorations for next year AND, to re-accessorize her bookshelves for the non-holiday months. This is such fun for us! It is a creative challenge to work with our client's decorations and accessories year after year to create new, fun, and attractive displays each time.

For this season my favorite new idea was to add glitzy faux poinsettias and lime-green glitter-covered leaves to our client's real potted plants. I tried to make the additions fit the plant, so that they became subtle surprises, not in-your-face garish additions. Keeping consistency of color (red poinsettias with a plant that had red flowers) and not over-doing (one faux flower or leaf per pot) gave just the "surprise!" look I was going for.

A trick of the trade when using cotton quilt batting for Snow Villages: place a piece of sandpaper underneath to hold the "snow" in place. Also, try using books underneath for height, hills and snowbanks in The Village.

Happy season of decorating (and other) fun!

It's never too late! I can usually do some framing magic even up to Christmas Eve (I can pull moulding and matboard out of my hat... but glass...ouch!). That said, you have lots more choice in frame and mat selection when you order ahead. In the framing industry even our suppliers sometimes run out. Please call ASAP to set up your appointment.

A clever holiday décor idea seen in Country Living Magazine, the December 2014/January 2015 issue: add a lightweight holiday bauble (they used a self-stick holiday bow) to the glass of your framed art, placed strategically. See the photo to the right. You can use an inside out rolled up piece of Scotch Tape to affix your addition to the glass. Make sure you are taping to regular glass, not glass with a UV or protective coating finish. Tapes or adhesives may ruin specialty glass! Look at the back of your frame to see if there is a label indicating a special type of glass. If not...have fun!

Nat and I have been shopping for light fixtures.
Check out these new looks in lighting...

The light shade is re-imagined in gossamer!
Very tinsel-y and fun for the holidays... for all year round!

Edison Light fixtures!  A fun (old) new trend in lighting.

HOLIDAY RECIPE . . . Bourbon Balls!

Great cookies to mail as out-of-town gifts, as they "age", get mellower, and get even more delicious over time. YUM!
Caution... HIGH ALCHOHOL CONTENT! Adults only!

½ cup chopped raisins (either dark or light raisins will work)
¼ cup bourbon
2 cups chocolate wafer crumbs
½ cup packed dark brown sugar
½  to 1 cup of chopped pecans
¼ cup unsulfured molasses
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground ginger
¼ teaspoon ground cloves

Soak the chopped raisins in the bourbon for 15 minutes. Combine with chocolate wafer crumbs, brown sugar, ½ cup of the chopped pecans, molasses, cinnamon, ginger and cloves. Form mixture into 1" balls (works better if your hands are slightly wet). Roll the balls in additional chopped pecans. Store in a tin for at least a couple of days before eating... if you can wait!

This recipe was one I cut out of the Post Dispatch many moons ago. Thanks to the Post for many years of boozy-cookie enjoyment!

A Happy Holiday Season to you all!
May your every moment be filled with joy!
