Healing Our Secrets New Year's Day Event

Please join me Thursday, January 1, 2015, for a New Year's Day get-together where we will focus on Healing Our Secrets:

  1. What types of secrets are we holding?
  2. Where are we losing our power (see the quote below)?
  3. How to heal our personal pain?

This will be a space for personal growth and healing, not for sharing secrets.
We will examine the effect on our lives of living with secrets.
We will create and enact a group ceremony for healing.

I recently read the book, "Raising My Rainbow" by Lori Duron and was struck by her words:

"Secrets give power to the person holding the ‘truth' who could possibly expose it. The powerless are the people whom the secret belongs to, the person who is scared to death (sometimes quite literally) of the secret being exposed. The bullies, predators, haters, and gossips in life move in circles; they sniff out the smallest scent of fear and strike. When there is no fear, no secret to sniff out and uncover, those people lose their power. The power goes back to the rightful owner."

What heavy burdens we all carry by hiding our secrets!

Fearing rejection and exclusion if one's secret were to become known and feeling anxiety at that thought are very human emotions. Almost every person has, at one time or another, felt afraid for others to "know". Whether in childhood: bed-wetting, thumb sucking, disabilities in speech, learning, or development. In adulthood: depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, financial instability, infidelities, physical abuse, drug addition, illegal activities/status. We have ALL had this experience, this feeling of wanting to hide a "shameful" truth.

[BTW, I put the word "shameful" in quotes here to indicate that this is not my word, not my feeling. I hope not to judge another, as I have not walked in their shoes. And yet, we can all ascribe our feelings of shame to hearing someone in our past telling us that our actions were wrong, bad, or that we were at fault.]

The issue, no matter what our secret: how to escape from the vaults of secrecy we have locked ourselves into? In our New Years' Day get-together we will deal with our own secrets... the ones that are ours to hold, to share, to heal... If you would like to participate in this Healing Our Secrets Event, please call Deb ASAP at 314-544-2555 to RSVP. Space is limited. Call soon!

Follow Up On Voting

Last month I went on a rant about the low voter turnout in the November elections. I asked you, Dear Readers, to tell me your ideas for improving the percentage of registered U.S. voters casting ballots. Here are some additional ideas that were sent in:

  1. Make it more widely known that one CAN apply to vote early under certain circumstances by casting an absentee ballot. This option is not available for everyone. To see the Absentee Ballot approved reasons, click this link and scroll down to the green writing:  http://www.stlouisco.com/YourGovernment/Elections/AbsenteeVoting/AbsenteeVoting.  So we still need to figure out a way to allow early voting for those who simply cannot make it to the polls on Election Day, but who don't qualify for Absentee Ballots.
  2. Better civics classes in schools:
Teach HOW the system works, where to go to get pre-election news (so one can make an educated choice as to who to vote for). Perhaps even, teach young "tech-y" folk to be the next generation of poll-workers. They will be great at handling any curfluffaws!
  3. No more negative campaigning allowed... an issue-based election only!
  4. Clear, concise languaging on amendments put on the ballot... NO MORE CONFUSING LEGALEZE!
  5. More publicity for League of Women Voters web site and other non-partisan information sources.

The over-arching theme here:

Great to know! This, we can work on!
