I’m BACK… from the Camino… from Spain…have been since the beginning of June. Life is more or less the same, but I am different.
I loved all the experiences I had (with the minor exceptions of physical pain, unusual sleeping and bathroom arrangements, and lack of tasty vegetarian fare). Other than that, all was perfect! The Camino was the perfect place for me to experience great joy…perfect to appreciate the beauty of new-to-me parts of this planet, perfect for creating heartfelt friendships with folks from all over the world. And, the Camino was a perfect place for me to learn life lessons.
It seems I am well suited to learn lessons about myself when I am in unfamiliar territory…when I step out of my usual, everyday life…out of my comfort zone. I just seem to stand out more clearly to myself against an unfamiliar background. Perhaps it’s that in a new place I am more aware of my actions…no comfy, familiar nook to retreat to, no common routine to glom onto…no old friends to share with. I am just there…3-D and in living color.
What I saw of myself in this beautiful and foreign environment was a strong, and determined woman. I found myself to be courageous, interesting, fun, and able…not ways I would have normally thought of myself. What I learned on this outside-of-ordinary-life plane were lessons about trusting myself and about trusting Divine Source.
I learned to trust myself to know: whether I needed companionship or time alone, whether to eat foods outside of my normal diet, when to take a rest or a healing day. I choose to NOT have a cell phone, and instead, to communicate with loved ones in the U.S. by internet because that choice honored my need to be in solitude. I learned which walking pace suited me best and I let others pass me. Or, I walked on ahead as I felt the need. I paid attention to all my body’s needs, and also to those of my heart, mind, and spirit. I found out that putting my own needs first AND being a loving and compassionate person were compatible choices.
Divine Source handled all the details. When I needed friends, they showed up. Ditto: money, directions, way-marker signs, places to stop and rest, to eat, to sleep, books to read when I thought I’d go crazy with boredom, new thoughts, even big questions, complete with answers… all showed up at the perfect times. I was witness to other people’s Camino lessons, too. It was a privilege to see the changes in thought process that came with those lessons. Thank you, Divine Source.
I am happy now to be back in St Louis, having realized my Big Dream, and ready to move on to my next one.
I will speak about my Camino experiences and show photos this fall. You are invited! Time, date, and location: to be announced. I look forward to seeing you!
